As prophets, Adam and Eve should have been meditating on God’s law (Genesis 2:16–17). The exchange between the serpent and Eve focuses on the specifics of that law. God was quite clear: “You must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die” (Genesis 2:17).
